What Exhaust Types Should You Get For An ATV or UTV?

What's going on everyone? Today, we're gonna be running through a bunch of different scenarios when it comes to what exhaust you should get for your ATV or UTV.

Before we begin, there are three main reasons why you're probably gonna be looking at upgrading the exhaust on your machine - power, sound, or maybe just a bit of a bling factor. If you're looking for more power, exhausts are a great option, with more air in, more air out, and more power at the end of the day. They have plenty of different tones too, so you could go with a kit that has either a more muffled or a fuller sound, and you can also find plenty of exhaust kits that can help your ATV or UTV look that much better.

So, knowing that, which exhaust kits should you be going with for your machine build? Today, we'll take you on a tour of all the different types of exhausts, as well as what you should look for when you start your build. Let's get right into it!

What Are The Different Types of ATV & UTV Exhaust?

Slip On Exhausts

When it comes to the different types of exhaust, probably the most common one that you've seen out there is a slip on exhaust. A slip on exhaust doesn't replace the mid pipe, and essentially only replaces the muffler. It's gonna give you a very different sound and a little bit extra breathing when it comes to the exhaust system so you can get a bit of an extra bump.

Typically, a slip-on exhaust kit is made up of a couple of bolts. You just pull the old one off, put the new one on, and voila - you've got a totally different sound for the machine, as well as a bit of a power pickup. They're a little less expensive than a full exhaust system, which makes slip-on exhaust kits an awesome, easy, and cost effective way to upgrade your machine.

Full Exhaust Kits

The next step up from a slip-on exhaust system is obviously a full exhaust. This kit is made if you take the slip-on exhaust that you have and then add the mid pipe that goes all the way to the motor, replacing the full exhaust to give you a full power benefit and unique sound that you're looking for.

Depending on the type of piping that you're going with, whether it's stainless or titanium, you can also use a full exhaust kit to get that cool looking factor, like blue-tinted thermal burning and other stuff. At the same time, you're getting the extra power and the sound that you want out of a full exhaust.

Cut Out Exhausts

The other type of exhaust that kinda sits with these two is a cut-out exhaust. If you're out with the family, heading to a campground or doing something where you don't want to make too much noise, a cut-out exhaust can help you flip a switch in the stock exhaust system when you're out ripping.

A cut-out exhaust system is great for letting you control how loud you want your ATV or UTV to be. You can flip the switch it comes with and it'll just dump the exhaust right before the muffler.

What To Look For When Getting Exhaust Kits For Your ATV or UTV

So, once you've got your desired exhaust type in mind, the next order of business is to figure out all the extra stuff that you'll want to keep an eye on when you're shopping for your kit. So, we've listed everything you should be looking for below.

Single Vs. Dual Pipes

First up is the option of either a single or dual exhaust setup. If you like the way exhaust kits look having dual pipes versus a single pipe, that's up to you - tons of riders swear by dual pipes and some ride exclusively with single pipes, but it's really your call on how you want to run your machine.

Repackable Mud Mufflers

If you're doing a lot of mud riding or mud bogging, you'll want to look at a mud muffler that you can repack. Some of them have an easy V-band clamp that you can pop the top off and repackage - some of them are rivets that you'll have to drill out, so that's up to you, but it's something you'll want to consider if you're doing a lot of mud riding.

Spark Arrestors

In addition to that, if you're out riding in dry fields or something similar, you don't want to be the guy who starts a fire. So, a lot of times, you're gonna be needing to run that spark arrestor. Most exhaust systems will come with a spark arrestor kit so you don't have to worry about it too much - just make sure that you're looking at installing one, because you don't want to set a forest on fire and have it be all your fault. Smokey the Bear already told us not to.

Tuners

Lastly, when it comes to the exhaust systems on ATVs, UTVs, or anything like that, you really need to be looking at tuning. Most of these exhaust manufacturers are saying that if you install an exhaust kit, you've got to tune the vehicle in order not to destroy the thing.

That's why we always recommend a tune - lean is mean, but the machine needs more fuel, so adding that tuning mechanism in there is gonna help you get much more power, be safer, and not ruin your engine, because nobody wants to do that.
