But every single root, rut, and rollover risk ends up getting absorbed by the same four things–your tires. So when June rolls around as National Tire Safety Month, don’t brush it off. This is your signal to stop pretending that bald, sketchy, or cracked rubber is “still functioning”. Because trust us, it’s not.
Let’s be real–these weren’t built to be mall crawlers. Your UTVs and ATVs eat terrain for breakfast, but when your tires are chewed up, underinflated, or all dried out from the last few seasons of hard use, you’re gambling every time you fire it up. Beat the Trail, Not Your Tires
Powersports tires tend to endure straight-up beatings on a regular basis. From rocks. Logs, jumps, and washouts, the punishment can add up fast. And even though it seems like your ride doesn’t flinch, that doesn’t mean it’s making it through all of this totally unscathed. If you don’t take five minutes to check your setup, the trail will take care of it for you, but not usually in a way you’d appreciate, typically when you’re farthest from camp. So here’s how to stay ahead of the wreckage.

Chunked Lugs, Trail Scars, and Slash Marks
Well-used tires always have stories to tell. What happened to that missing tread block? It’s from the time you throttled too hard in granite. What about that sidewall bulge? A leftover gift from last weekend’s sketchy line. But the thing is, those “badges of honor” can turn into trail-ending damage really quick if you’re not inspecting after every ride.
Don’t just kick the tires–make sure to get low and run your hands across every inch. Feel for slices, check the bead, and spot early signs of tearing or dry rot before they get worse. A $10 plug kit won’t save you from a blowout at 40 mph. If it’s damaged, swap it. If it’s sketchy, then trash it. Real trail confidence starts with clean rubber.
PSI Isn’t a Guessing Game–Get it Right
This isn’t your buddy’s Civic. You can’t just eyeball tire pressure and hope that it holds up. Whether you’re floating through dunes or crawling slick rock, the right PSI makes or breaks your traction, as well as your sidewalls. Air them down too much, and you’re begging for a flat. Boost them up too high, and you’ll bounce around like a beach ball and lose crucial bite when it matters most.
One thing to help alleviate the issue is getting a low-pressure gauge to stop the guessing game. Base your numbers on what you’re riding: soft for sand, firm for sharp rock, and balanced for a mixed trail. And if you’re switching between different terrains mid-ride, then adjust it. It’s a simple five minute fix that’ll keep your tires alive and your grip tighter where it counts.

Old Tires Can Lie–Just Because They Look Good Doesn’t Mean They Are
You park your machine for winter, then uncover it for spring. The tread looks pretty decent, so you assume all’s good and you’re ready to roll. But behind that seemingly intact beefy lug pattern can be years of rot, sun damage, or internal cracking just waiting to explode the second you hit something hard.
In order to avoid these situations, look for the DOT date on the sidewall. If it’s past five years, it’s living on borrowed time. And if you’ve been storing your rig on flat rubber for months, be sure to check for flat sports and splits. Tires don’t need high mileage to fail, all they need is age, heat, and a bit of neglect.
